About Me
I am fortunate that my husband's job gives me so many opportunities for travelling and living in different countries. I was born in England, but my parents soon decided to move to Canada, and the travels began at the early age of three. I grew up in Toronto, Ontario (when it was "Toronto the Good" and it was illegal to drink a beer in your own backyard), went to Queen's to study history, and spent a few years doing a variety of things before I realized that I was and had always been a librarian.
I married an engineer and was whisked off to Calgary, where I found my niche as the librarian in a small research company. In due course Dick's job took us to New York State, three years of interesting experience for me working in "big science" at a National Lab, and eventually a Masters at Syracuse. Having finally qualified to do the job I had been working at for 15 years, Dick again packed up his goods and chattels and I found myself back in England at last. After two very happy years in Cheshire, followed by an interesting three in the Czech Republic, and four in Epsom, we returned to Calgary for a little while, just to remind ourselves how much we hate winter.
A complicated move that involved 8 months in a different part of Upstate New York and a final relocation to Houston took nearly two years to complete. The latest posting has us dividing our time between Houston and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is a fantastic opportunity to meet new people, explore a new part of the world, and learn about some fascinating and very different cultures.
I have concentrated on photography since I finally threw in the towel and gave up being a career librarian. I think I work harder at it than I ever did at any full time job, but since I enjoy every minute, it doesn't seem like work.
Recent travels included an autumn journey through England, with visits to the beautiful and unspoilt county of Northumberland and time spent with windmills in the Norfolk Broads. From there to Upstate New York in time for spectacular autumn colours, and on to Canada's west coast and Vancouver Island. Christmas week found us at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Malaysian Borneo, followed by a trip up the Kinabatangan River to see Proboscis monkeys. Upcoming is Australia, specifically Perth and Melbourne, followed by visits to some of my favourite haunts in Vancouver Island, Canada. Later we will have a chance to return to an unspoiled part of Bali, and in October we will be sailing in the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean.
